Hi, I'm Angi
Welcome to my corner of the internet! My passions include travel, photography, books, music, Japanese language and culture, Italian language and culture, and art.

Here at Abbott Lane you'll find my thoughts on these topics and much more. Thanks for stopping by to visit!

August TBR

I'm a little late with posting this! But I figured better late than never. Last month I had real success with creating a TBR, something I didn't anticipate at all. But I ended up reading much more than typical, so I figured I'd keep doing a monthly TBR and see if that trend holds up.

This time around I've decided to read 6 books, which is pretty ambitious since I'm fairly behind on my goal already. It's going to take some concentrated reading sessions to get through six, but I'm up for the challenge. It's all in the spirit of fun anyway! Here are my plans...

The Last Days - Adam Nevill
The Temple of the Last Days. The brutal cult with a history of murder, sex and occult dealings destroyed itself during one night of ritualistic violence decades ago. Or so they thought...

Kyle Freeman is an indie film-maker with no money and few options, so when he lands a commission to make a documentary about The Temple of the Last Days he jumps at the chance. Little does he know that his investigation into the cult's bloody history will lead him into the darkest places he's ever been.

I've been listening to this on audio book for awhile and to be honest it's only just been okay. However, I'm more than 60% done and I figure I might as well finish. It also provides some entertainment during my workday, so that's a bonus.

We Ride Upon Sticks - Quan Berry
Set in the coastal town of Danvers, Massachusetts, where the accusations began that led to the 1692 witch trials, We Ride Upon Sticks follows the 1989 Danvers High School Falcons field hockey team, who will do anything to make it to the state finals—even if it means tapping into some devilishly dark powers.

This is one I learned about through the Reading Glasses Podcast, one of my favorites! It's about a team of field hockey players who sorta kinda accidentally make a pact with the devil. It seems hilarious, and just the type of light read you need to have on a TBR.

The Nickel Boys - Colson Whitehead
When Elwood Curtis, a black boy growing up in 1960s Tallahassee, is unfairly sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called the Nickel Academy, he finds himself trapped in a grotesque chamber of horrors. Elwood’s only salvation is his friendship with fellow “delinquent” Turner, which deepens despite Turner’s conviction that Elwood is hopelessly naive, that the world is crooked, and that the only way to survive is to scheme and avoid trouble. As life at the Academy becomes ever more perilous, the tension between Elwood’s ideals and Turner’s skepticism leads to a decision whose repercussions will echo down the decades.

This has been on my list to read for awhile, and I even have it in my collection. I've just never taken the time to sit down and read it. This month is the month!

Book Club Book + Two Free Slots - TBA
My book club is meeting this weekend, so I'll know then what the club pick is for the month. Until then, this remains a mystery! And just like last month, I'm going to slot in two "free" choices, so that I don't feel like the list is so rigid.
