Best Books: July

Oh my gaaaaaaahd! As has been the case for the past few months, July was also pathetically slim in terms of reading. I only got through two books, one of which was an audiobook. I'm about 15 books behind my set goal of 80 reads this year, and...well...I don't even want to talk about how many books behind my stretch goal of 100 books.

My favorite read this month was a no-brainer. It was the kind of reading experience that I long for in many ways, and that I hadn't had in a long time...

Guys, if you haven't read this already, you should pick it up IMMEDIATELY. Miller writes in such simple yet beautiful language that really gets to the heart of the story. It's essentially a retelling of The Iliad, but in this version of the story Patroclus and Achilles are in love.

And let me tell you - this book ripped my heart out, and then gently sewed it back together (though it will never be the same). It manages to capture the epic mythology of the story - full of gods and war and prophecies - while also making their relationship very relatable. It's a beautiful testament to the timelessness of love.

Miller wrote a second novel called Circe, which I ordered as my Book of the Month Club selection a few months ago. It's been patiently sitting on my bookshelf waiting for me to begin and now, based on how much I enjoyed Song of Achilles, I can't wait to dive in!

Other books read this month: Dread Nation by Justina Ireland
