Oy! It's almost July, but I realized that I never got around to talking about the best books I read in May. So here I am!
May was a TOUGH month. I had to say goodbye to my sweet kitty Smuch, and so my brain was all over the place. I have to be honest - I didn't get a ton of reading done. Only four books total. There's also something about summer. Summer makes me want to go outside and explore. And despite the fact that the weather here hasn't been all that "summery," my mind is still having trouble settling down with a book.
So I only have one favorite for the month, and it was...
TADA!!!! Loose Woman - a book of poetry by Sandra Cisneros. This was my first exposure to Cisneros' work despite the fact that her book, The House on Mango Street, has been on my TBR list for approximately a century. Ha! After reading her poetry, I'm even more excited to read her novel.
This collection of poems captures something really special, but it's something that's hard to put into words. It manages to capture what it's like to be young and careless and bold, but still confused and trying to find your way in the world. It's unabashedly Latina and feminist. It captures hot summer nights and love and lust. It feels really unwieldy, and a bit dangerous, and it's fantastic!
