Being Away, and Coming Back

Somehow I pictured myself writing more on this blog than I have been. I've always been a someone that writes - maybe not well, or prolifically - but a "writer" just the same. Filling pages upon pages of journals and/or keeping a blog is something I've done since Jr. High. It's something that keeps me grounded and in the moment.

Lately, I haven't had the desire to stay grounded one bit. Being connected to the "real" world is far too painful. The months leading up to the election and its result have left me feeling like I've been punched in the gut. I'm terrified for our democracy, and frightened for all those (including myself) who have been Othered and told that we don't deserve the same rights as those in power. So, I've been doing all I can to escape all the horrific thoughts churning in my mind by spending a lot of time watching Netflix, reading cozy British mysteries and old Stephen King novels, and indulging in fancy chocolate.

But it's at times like these that I need to push through my pain points and WRITE. And for myself, not anyone else. Writing, along with photography and music, has always given me a way to wade through my most challenging moments, to sort out my feelings, and come out on the other end as a stronger, more focused human.  All of these things keep me connected to who I am.

So, here's to more writing on this blog, and elsewhere, in 2017. I hope that you also find solace and peace in the things you love this year!
